But that was Columbus. Ferdinand Magellan is credited with a first circumnavigation of the planet...but he didn't make it.
He got bumped off in the Philippines. One of his ships did make the trip. Out of five ships and three hundred sailors one ship and about a dozed sailors made it all the way around back to Spain.

Seems they kept going west until they hit something. They knew what Columbus hit. Gotta wonder who was the navigator after Ferdinand got killed?
