Sept. 14) -- After a weekend marked by a large anti-Obama demonstration in Washington, D.C., commentators are pondering what role race plays in the growing wave of opposition to the nation's first African-American president.
Several veteran Democrats tell Politico they see racism as a factor in efforts to delegitimize the Obama presidency -- especially among those who portray him as an outsider by claiming he wasn't born in the United States. Salon's Joan Walsh writes that his opponents are "blackening" Obama by "simultaneously diminishing his support and emphasizing his ethnicity." She notes that the president is steadily losing support among white voters.
New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd was struck by the spectacle of Rep. Joe Wilson -- a white, South Carolina Republican who fought to keep the Confederate flag flying over his state's Capitol -- yelling "you lie!" at Obama during last week's speech to Congress. She says the outburst convinced her that "some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it."
Asked about Dowd's column during an appearance on CNN Sunday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs acknowledged the rhetoric sometimes gets "way too hot," but added, "I don't think the president believes that people are upset because of the color of his skin."
Townhall's Star Parker has a different take on Obama and race. She says that while the president's approval rating among blacks remains above 90 percent, it has slipped in recent months. Parker believes many African-Americans voted for Obama "out of racial pride," but are now having a change of heart because of their "values and aspirations for freedom."We right wingers new this would happen if a black man ever got in .If your not w/Obama and his lib.BS your a racist ..Want a fucking joke!!
