Bill was on a private mission. It was reported that Kim wanted an apology for the trespass and a high profile figure to visit.
I know people love to think there is a conspiracy on anything that happens, but what did the Koreans have to gain by keeping them in prison? I think it is most likely a case of letting them go without looking like they gave in. The Koreans had plenty of time to interrogate and found out that the reporters didn't know shit and in no way were they or their crossing a threat. Just my 2 cents, I have nothing to back any of this up.
