And this bill does nothing to fix what the biggest part of the problem is, lawyers. Think about it, you go to the doctor with a cold, they give you a couple of prescriptions for antibiotics wihich do nothing for a cold at all or you go to the ER because you twisted your ankle and it an x ray and mri's and bloodwork. Why, because if you don't give the antibiotics or all of the extra tests and ANYTHING happens shortly afterwards, you get sued and if you are in a big city, which all of the lawsuits tend to be filed in, you get creamed by a lib jury and a multi million dollar judgement against you. So the doctors order test upon test and prescribe drug after drug to protect them from the lawyers.
There have been numerous articles written in the Philadelphia newspapers about the lawyers suing for the ability to sue in Philadelphia courts as opposed to the suburban counties just to get a case before a solidly liberal jury. They tend to lean far away for the "rich" doctors and tend to give the astronomical judgements. But we create a bill to fight for coverage for the uninsured which are uninsured for the most part because of cost but do absolutly nothing to rein in the costs. Make sense to anyone? But congress does not want to do anything to anger lawyers, because they are all lawyers to, many still have a practice or partnership post at home. Nothing to see here, yeah right.
And superlinedog is right on. You very rarly see people fleeing the US to go for health care elsewhere. We have the best there is to offer. Also keep this in mind, Canada, one of the poster children the media likes to hold up, readily admits care is rationed AND offers no prescription drug coverage for an average tax to everyone of about 50 %. And before you get started on the "drugs are so much cheaper there" kick, do you know why? Because the gov't sets the prices at a percentage of what the US prices are. And before you go and say "then we should too", keep this in mind. In Canada, they spend 10 to 15% of sales on R&D. In the US it is almost 30% of a higher price is spent developing new drugs. We in essence are subsidising Canada and the world in developing new drugs. So what are the options, don't make any new drugs or you have to pay to fund new ones. And as a footnote, you make a new drug, go through years of gov't monitored testing and 10 years down the road a problem is identified, what happens? Another lawyer sues you for billions and billions. Also much harder by law to do in most other countries in the world including Canada. But still cant fix the lawyers ( see above ).
And as has been said here before, in Canada anything beyond a primary care visit or a true emergency, you will wait and wait to see a specialist or a surgeon. Doctors in Canada do not make what they do here, so there are far fewer of them and because the best and the brightest come here to make more money, the quality of doctor is not quite what it is here espescially the specialists. And yes, they do take into consideration your age, are you working right now, can your illness be cured so you can go back to work and HOW EXPENSIVE WILL IT BE TO TREAT before anything gets done. There is ususally no million dollar treatment just to give you 6 more months to live in the Canadian system. Try that here and see how fast you get to see the patients.........lawyer serving paper on you.
Google for yourself what I have laid out here. Then ask is the cost of what these esteemed members of congress want you to believe. And remember this, if it ends up costing more than what they "project", and you know it will just like medicare, who foots the bill. We do through more and higher taxes or a bigger deficit. Fix the problems of why healthcare is so expensive first and see what happens before they take over another industry that they have no legal right to. It si our government, not theirs, demand they do it the right way and not the make gov't bigger and more expensive way.
