I have seen this done as well but it is not the proper practice, it will kill your noise between the pre and post amp in the mod. Yes on the meter you can make your levels go where you need them but in the long run it is bad for the overall system health and will also reduce the life of the gas chip. And in a few years when you are trying to do noise in the system good luck.
