This kind of thing is exactly why I can't understand why people are hung up on part politics. Both sides are terrible, you can switch parties at will. Arlen Specter was a dem who switched to rep to run for the senate who changed back to a dem because reps were ready to throw him out. It is a joke to believe the party is anything more than a way to raise money from a specific group of donors.
