But the government was involved up to their eyballs all along the way. They wrote and passed the laws and the regulations that doomed American manufacturing. I do not see how you can look at it differently. The work place regulation, the tax structure, OSHA all of it adds costs to anything done here completely hamstringing the US workforce. The US wage is higher than most of the world, no arguement , but US productivity per worker hour is second to none. But it still cant overcome the cost burden of all of the governments, state and federal.
Cable TV, hell all of telecommunications is a rats nest, i fully agree. But I still don't want the government to be big brother in it. If you want to be a contractor, the people need to act like one too. Businesses all of the time get stiffed. If you do your job fully and correctly, you have your paperwork , photos and you invoicing in order, a small claims (under 10,000.00) case is not hard to put together and win. If you sign a contract, you should have read it and understood it before you signed it. Before you go to work for some one on credit terms, which 14 or 30 days from invoice is, you should know the credit histroy of your customer.
I am not niave to believe you can never ber burned and that there are unscrupulous primes out there, but too many in the biz make it easy to rob them. If you sign a contract without reading it, who is to blame when the prime uses the you waive all of your rights as a human clause, you are. Taking work at a price that is way under value is your decision.
I am working on a clown right now who owes me for 25,000 for 3 small cell sites jobs. I have my paper in order, complete with pics down to close ups of the screws installed. I went to the 2 differernet carriers and explained my problem of not being paid, they gave me all of the help I asked for because I had my docs in order. They gave me the copies of the checks that they paid the GC with. I was able to take it to the county prosecutors office and have gotten a criminal charge filed against the owner for embezzlement , fraud and deceptive business practices. I will let you know when it is over, but I now the prime had a cow when he was notified to turn himself in.
But bottom line is, I was responsible for myself and my crew. I did not ask the government to bail me out, I asked them to do their job as the enforcer of the law of the land yes, but not to give me money because I ran a shoddy company myself. And believ me you do not want any more intrution into your life by than the government than absolutly necessart. Because once there, it is next to impossible to make them leave.
