Your wife and mother in law are doing exactly the right thing. Lets be truthful, most politicians are like cock roaches, shine a light on them and watch them scatter and run for the shadows. By writing and calling, the are in effect telling the pols I am watching and will hold you accountable. That threatens their most sought after thing in life, re election. All of the perks for them only come if they stay in office.
And further, they are doing more than most Americans are now doing. The important thing is not what you are doing, but that you are doing something.
As far as the pace of things, if you look back at history, the progressive movement started back at Teedy Roosevelt back around 1900. This has been a long process and we can't really expect to fix this mess in a hour. It is going to be a long haul. And we really can't depend on a willing media. Most of the publishers and tv producers are progressives and liberals. So it is important to use forums like this and talk radio to take the fight to the politicians.
And for your last words, that is only possible if as a people we let it.
