Re: This is what it is

In my opinion, anyone who depends on the government to do anything efficently and effectivly is nuts. What have they done in the last 100 years to garner that trust? This is the same government that has allowed the infrastructure to collpase ( and contrary to media opinion, it didn't all start under Bush. This is a decades old problem). And they still haven't fixed their own healthcare mess ( medicare ), so why the hell do you want to give them complete control?

But before you so easily agree to allow the government to take over an entire industry, ask yourself why is the current system broken. And once you answer that, ask have we done EVERYTHING that can be done to fix it before nationalizing it?

I am only second generation US citizen. I still have plenty of family still in the UK. The helathcare is 'free' but you get what you pay for. The taxes are high to pay for it ( so much for free ) and if you need to see a specialist, be prepared to wait and wait and wait. And yes they do have a 'means' test. How old are you, are you working ( and paying taxes ) and what is the chance of curing your illness. A bad answer on 1 is not good for you and 2 or more, you are done except for pain management.

Then ask why have we not had tort reform? It is one, if not the only one, of the biggest componets of higher healthcare costs in the US. Doctors do make mistakes, but look at these jury awards. They are out of control. And who pays for them, you and I do. The insurance co pays you, charges a higher premium to the doctor and hospital, who then raises it's charge to you. We end up paying for it. But you cant risk pissing off lawyers who are amongst the largest camapign donors can we. Explain why this is not fixed before turning all of healthcare over to government.

Then who is going to pay for it. Are we really supposed to beleive they are going to put the receipts for healthcare taxes in a trust fund? Wonder if it will be at the same bank they keep the social security and medicare trust fund at.

As far as energy goes, all of these neat technologies they are speaking about are not ready for large scale commercial use. Solar is still way too expensive, wind has its own problems such as when the wind doesn't blow there is no power. Is anyone ready to accept no lights on cloudy and calm days? We have energy resources available to us right now, but no one in congress has a spine to go and get it. Can't upset the eviromental lobby and lose votes in elections, to hell with what is best for the country.

I am involved with a new technology that will create renewable energy myself. It is over 20 years in the making and is close but not finished yet. That is the problem with most of the alternative energy systems out there today. They just aren't ready fo full time on demand 24/7/365 operation yet. So we need to exploit coal nuclear and oil until they are ready. Why is this so hard to understand.

Go figure, do you know employs all of the lobbiests pushing for the alternatives today, it is the manufacturers. Gee there is no conflict of interest there.

We need to start using common sense and stop depending on 20 second sound bites to make choices on issues like these. Otherwise, the people who make 20 second sound bites will run this country and not us. Is that what we are hoping for in change?
