Sorry to be a smarty-pants, but Rome was a nation-state for 500 years and then an empire for 500 more. When the Eastern Roman Empire split, Byzantium ruled for another 1000 years. Egypt's empire lasted 3100 years, the Mayans had one for 2900 years, the Chinese are still at it since 250BC and Britain owns Gibralter so they're 500 and counting.
