Each system has their own specs ..... but a good place to start is with the Society of Cable and Telecommunications Engineers website:  www.scte.org

They have a library online that you can buy books about installs on.  There is one that is about $100.00 that they use for certification for Broadband Premises Specialist (triple-play installer).  It lays out in pretty good detail on what almost all MSO's are looking for when doing residential installs. 

...and yes.  I have read/studied the book and have my SCTE-BPS certification.  It has done wonders for job promotions and getting a raise.
