Internet access is now the bread and butter money making part of all of these companies. Landline phone is a dying technology. Conventional video is not far behind. All of this bandwidth metering is just a way to extract more from you. Internet access costs the carriers very little as compared to what the other 2 services require to operate. But ask yourself, out of the three, which 2 would you loseif you could only keep one?
They also keep trying to bundle all of it together because they don't want to have to abandon all of the money they have spent on the landline phone ( for verizon att and the rest of the clecs) and video side ( for comcast, tw and the rest). It would look really bad on the financial statements.
But here is another question, if they are successful in consumer metering, how long is it before they start trying to charge content providers access fees? That is where they can really start to make money. And remember, there was already rumblings about this a few years back.
