I dont know if direct actually requires solid copper cable but it does carry signal better over longer runs. I can say this, If direct is requiring solid copper cable they have a lot of failed QC's over here. Most of the conversions I do here in my area have 3 ghz cable copper clad steel. Some however do have solid copper.
