Re: philips: PLEASE READ

RF2Lite@RF,

Hello again! I see that the "Old Philips" stuff is still out there. I am still willing to assist anyone who needs info on the equipment.

Yes it is true that Philips had some "old" -30dB resistive equipment, but in the later years it DID manufacturer -20dB COUPLED testpoints on their gear. Since there was so much and so many different types made over the years, many people have negative "junk" talk...and I have heard it all. Yes, I did work for Philips/Magnavox as a field engineer in years past and had even worked on the gear back in the early 1980's as well.

What I have found mostly (and this is from the Americas to Asia), the equipment was either NOT UNDERSTOOD about PROPER ALIGNMENT and was set-up INCORRECTLY causing MAJOR DISTORTIONS or the external plant the amplifiers were introduced into had MAJOR (splicing, water damage, chewed cable, drops from the 1970's, ect...) problems causing return problems and signature issues.

That is not to say that the equipment was PERFECT. I do not think there was a manufacturer then or now who does not have or had some sort of problems that were (or should have) been addressed. CUSTOMER EDUCATION on PROPER IMPLEMENTATION is the best answer for any and all amplifiers since a technician can be his own worst enemy. Unfortunately many people in this industry do not understand the BASICS that will either make or break the HFC network. It is easier to BLAME the equipment than fess-up that "I just don't know the proper procedure".

I do not write this to offend anyone but to just try to set the record straight. Even though there are many who hate the gear, I have heard just as many complain about other manufacturers also and take it with a light ear. Training is the best answer and to spend $$$ to upgrade what plant surrounds ANY type amplifier is not always done.

Please call me or e-mail me if anyone has any questions on this gear. My e-mail has changed from that OLD post.
