You know, in respect to unions, they have their place. I believe they do not have the ability to be used in the CATV arena. I find it a far better system to pay footage, or production to a set of contractors (my guys) than to pay them as employees. The reasons are as follows.
a. If they work, they get paid, if they dont, they dont. Tell a union guy you wont pay him if hes dicking off, right
b. The production rate gets done a lot faster when they get paid by the piece.
c. If they dont want to work for a week, who cares (mainly around bike week)
d. If they screw up, cancel their contract and find someone who cares about their work.
e. Experience pays for itself, screw having a union shop full of I havent been to class on that yets.
f. Ambition is a key ingredient in this biz. Look for it in a union shop, found it yet.
g. The last reason, and probably the best reason in my book. If I tell someone how, when, and what to do in regards to a job and they dont like it, I tell them to piss off. In a union shop you have to wait for them to contact their mommy, er union rep and then they want to have a discussion with you about it.
In the end of it all, I write the checks, I mostly pay above market rates, I pay on time or aheadI(yes ahead), I expect work done that I promise to the customer. If the worker feels he is slighted, then it is better for him to buy me a beer and talk to me about it rather than having his Rep schedule a meeting (PS my office is the front seat of a truck you friggin union rep idots), lastly if he is un happy, drive on down the road, the cable company will surely pay you 22.00 an hour when I wass paying you 45.00 an hourpiece rate with fridays off and bought you lunch everyday I was on site(mon thru thurs)
To all union wanters, look at your sorroundings, if you feel the need for a union, maybe its time to more to more profitable sorroundings.
