Throughout the industry many of us have been ripped of by some sub. Here's my somewhat foolproof method for not getting ripped off.
1st. Stop working for sub's under subs. They never have any money and have nothing to loose by not paying you.
2nd. It doesn't matter if you are a employee or contractor have a contract written up about how you are paid, when, and the details of any chargebacks that can be applied. Anyone who refuses to sign the contract, walk away. They are the ones that will screw you over.
3rd. Try to work for the Prime, HSP, or has high up as you can. The closer you get to the MSO the more they have to loose if you call the labor board.
4. Keep track of every work order and photos of all jobs completed. If you goto small claims you will need proof of work completed and you don't want the company to say you done lousey work.
If everyone follows these rules, we can put an end to techs getting ripped off.
