Just depends on the duties and contract.
Again most all new construction was piece work, rehab usually paid hourly rate. I've also been a "contract phone man" which entailed doing pretty much anything the supervisor said and varied from day to day (hourly rate). The union phone guys hated us!
I've been paid both ways here in NC, but that was about 10 years ago.
