Yes, this was a tight headend. Brand new RCN upgrade, than purchased buy Patriot Media in Somerset New Jersey. 1 to 1 optical forward combining. 1 Motorola driver amp to 4 transmitters. Driver amps were upgraded with Gallium Arsenide chips. Headend was all Scientific Atlantic continuum gear. I had 58db C/N before combining gear to the transmitters. 55 to 56db C/N into transmitters. 53 to 54 C/N at node was average.
We would use inline pads on the input to the driver amps to get 19db flat in. Than tilt the output to compensate for 50 to 100 feet of RG59 headend cable to get 23db flat input to the transmitter.
The trick is to know what levels to hit your equipment with. For a nominal fee and round trip airfare, I will guarantee low 50’s C/N at the node.
