Hi; Fiber-Optic training with telephone, data and digital training is the way to go. Splicing on catv today is alot of work because these systems have been retro-spliced 3-4-5 times in the last 10-15 years. Sweep is just as bad. CATV is going to 1GHz systems and there is alot of trouble-shooting involved which means being able to take equipment apart and re-splice it and using a TDR to find damaged and bad cable. With sweep also are a whole set of problems associated with the cable system headend. Some of the problems are; return sweep being disconnected or moved without notice, node output levels are out of spec., sweep response is distorted, access to the headend so someone can get in their and fix the sweep transmitter.
Wirelesss is going to 3GHz and fiber to 10GHz this is where the new technology is going and where decent jobs with benefits or contracts will be in the next five years. The pay in CATV is lower than it was in 2000. The CATV companies do not have much money and their contract prices are low. The phone companies have much more money and are in a position to spend it on fiber and wireless. My son is going to college for an associates in optical technology and the school has a job referral and 90% of the students get good jobs with benefits from 40K-50K to start. There are tech schools that offer 2-3 day seminars, 1-2 week courses, SCTE internet/mail-in courses and testing. Depending on your experience and background this might be enough training to get into a wirelss/fiber job. If you are lucky enough to have a job at home for long term then you might want to consider some college or community college to get a formal degree.
Good luck,
