FiberSlasher -
Thanks for sharing this story (written by Om Malik). Mr. Malik must be struggling to keep his job as he's written a "Chicken Little - The Sky is Falling" type story. I clicked the link at the bottom of your post and read all the material. From what I've read, the internet service provided by the MSO's is already being "shaped" to reduce congestion. What Cox Communications is doing is announcing a slight shift in how they keep the best service experience possible to ALL customers. They're doing a trial to see in just two of their markets to see "How" a shift from a "Priority Based on Measurable Congestion" architecture to a "Protocol Based on Measurable Congestion" style.
On their own site, Cox Comm. states that its just a trial. They don't know, nor can they forecast, the impact of the style switch and this is why its a dynamic trial. Dynamic, as in "subject to change or cancellation". They say if its successful and measurably improves "best service to all", then they would look at rolling it out in late 2009.
Mr. Malik seems to think that the MSO's have a crystal ball and can foretell the future. Unfortunately this is not true. If it was, I'd be calling them and asking for the winner to the Super Bowl. I'd love to place a bet in Vegas.
Peace
