Re: CATV 20 years ago

Well let’s see, it was a little different back then. For a basic install we would take our paperwork and head out to the customers house. Usually they never had cable so it would be a new install. But id did not matter how close the pole was, we did not even look for the nearest tap we would set our ladder up to the nearest cable and place our saddle for the pressure tap on the cable and tighten it down. Then we would drill through the outer shield of the cable or if we were lucky we may have a self taping pressure tap. Then we would place a 0 db stinger into the pressure tap and screw it in until it touched the center conductor.

We would take a signal reading (if you were lucky you had one of the new fangled battery powered meters or you may have a trusty Jerrold 704. A few of the crews working for me on storm damage this year got to see on my truck. You would see what your signal level was and calculate your drop loss then install the proper stinger to get signal to the house.

Most customers only had one TV and there was no internet, VOIP, or pay per views. So we did. We did not have much concern over ingress or egress back then either. Of course that’s back when The Green Channel became HBO and we started having our first movie channel’s  That’s also about the time when Time Warner launched Sight On Sound locally in Columbus Ohio later to become MTV and we had the Pinwheel channel later to become Nickelodeon.

But that was the good old days. The only thing the same these days is we are seeing 1970’s pay in 2009
