I had to prove to the IRS that I was not working in an area when someone borrowed my S.S. number. I did not work there and did not get paid there and it was a frikken night mare. You are right about checking their accounts. Kount the burden of proof is still on you.
IRS don't give a squat, they want their money from whoever. It ended up alright for me but it took forever and I still don't know if the person using my number ever got the axe.
This is what happened to me in 1980. It sucks.
