When I ask for some personal identification from the interviewer and he puckers up I worry. When they say they are out of some of the paperwork I worry. If the guy says I want to be perfectly honest....run.
Invest minimum time and money until you see how they do business. As a contractor you are furniture. You can't date the secretary.
