Follow the money. The problem is, the big bowl games do not want to be made irrelevant. They love the tourist dollars flowing into their cities. Those tourists have plenty of time to make travel arrangements to those cities under the bowl system. They stay for several days, possibly a week.

The playoff system doesn't allow for that. Your team wins on Saturday, you may or may not travel to that game. It's doubtful, if you work for a living, you'll be able to turn it into a vacation and spend your $$$$'s.

The small bowls exist for TV. Look at how many are actually OWNED, not just televised, by ESPN. The big bowls are cash cows for their cities. There will never be a viable playoff system as long as $$$$ come first. The University Presidents love that money. I don't see that changing, unfortunately.
