Thermal Cycling in Fiber Optic Cables

Does Anyone have any knowledge of this so called thermal cycling in fiber optic cable, and what it would look like on an otdr. I have a span of fiber underground that gets a large loss only in extreme cold temps. If anyone has any knowledge of this, and how it can be fixed i would really appreciate it. Thanks.
