from my exterminatator: don't EVER bring those boxes in your house again! i had to have him hit my truck that time. wanted to puke for a week.
on the topic though: i don't use a cap. ladder rack with a bar pinned into a simple pipe in pipe setup on ladder rack for cable. cheap REMOVABLE toolbox (just threw a wheel bearing 400 miles from home, wasn't leaving my tools and drop for the mechanic) i use a couple cases of 2 liter bottles with the tops cut out for small parts. tools go on top during transport. NEW BOXES (i do dish these days) in the cab. plenty of room in the bed for extra crap. it sounds bootleg, but it's cheap and efficient and can be put together in 3 hours. invest in a good 1/2 cable and padlock to slow down a thief and keep the ladders on when you lose a tire on the highway! i'd send pix but a mechanic is holding my girl hostage waiting on parts.
