I agree with you, as long as the up and downstream are within specs. it makes perfect sense (which usually doesn't apply in cable TV). However you could get better signal control if needed by using DC's (directional couplers) with the modem on the tap leg, especially in a system that tends to have higher signal levels at the house box. You can then control the downstream signal by using the proper DC (6dB drop, 9dB drop, 12dB drop, etc.) in order to aim for the 0 dB target for downstream. Using DC's in front of the video splitter would give you a normally inconsequential signal loss (~1 - 2 dB) going into the video splitter off of the output leg of the DC.

But hey, every system seems to have their own preferred method, lol.
