Both my P-ups are the heavy 3/4's ( same as 1 ton w/o duals) .... both have the Cummins. The 01 has the 24 valve HO with the 6 speed manual tranny, gets a consistent 15 mi/ gal. towing no matter what the terrain and 20 + or - with no trailer.
my 96 has an auto tranny and a 12 valve motor. take 2 mi/gal off what the 01' gets, pullin and empty.
If your not lazy go with the 6 speed. They are a great transmission and shift like a dream, the only time you need the clutch is when you start or stop.
Look at the new Sterling trucks ... they have the new Cummins ISB in them ( sterling is owned by Diamler now). They are making the 3500,4500,5500 series trucks. They are pretty sharp.
