Well the jury was not pleased by the cavalier attitude of the execs at Mcdonalds....their attitude was "we have more important things to do than worry about people who burn themselves with our coffee." Yes there were many cases and the Shriners had asked that the coffee's temp be lowered as there were cases that involved children. McDonald's did not want to do that. The coffee was hot because the coffee makers indicated that it was best to have it that hot because the attraction was the smell and that level of heat was required to release those aromas. The lady was not driving and was pulled over and was taking the lid off to add the sugar and the coffee spilled. It was so hot she had to have skin grafts to fix the skin which McDonalds knew would cause 3rd degree burns within seconds.
Have any of you spilled a cup of coffee on accident? Do you expect 3rd degree burns for it? Or skin grafts? Maybe burned but not 3rd degree.
Also the way McDonald's legal team handled the case was apathetic which also did not impress the jury. After hearing these facts I was forced to at least entertain the idea that maybe she wasn't as stupid as I, the media and others had made her sound.
