Like you said, you have to be able to sleep at night . Part of being a pro is learning to critique your own work and doing it the way it is supposed to be done. You would think that would be noticed by your employers and be rewarded for the extra effort. I have worked jobs that had loose specs (no re bending loops, straightening cable, etc) but I have to live with the mess that was left behind. Just do the job the way it should be done and no-one can question your integrity.
