On a realistic note, in the early days (early-late '80's) widespread practice was to strip color coat with methylene chloride, commonly used as paint stripper. You'd dip and wipe, and poor housekeeping allowed it to get on fingers and into mouths, eyes; all over. Tastes sweet, but burns like heck on forearms or thighs when clothes got soaked. Methylene chloride is a well-proven source of cancer.
Other than having those damn black spots from retinal laser burns, I'd say the industry is pretty safe. As long as you disregard that ugly tumor on my lip........
