I've seen that happen on u/g plant once. Had 50 odd volts, every time you put the amp in it would drop out to nothing. Turned out to be damaged,corroded plant that had been chopped into by a construction company during road work and covered back up. They were putting in work ahead signs and hacked the trunk up with post hole diggers, they set the sign right on top of the hacked up trunk cable and never said a word to anyone, few weeks later the cable spoke up!
