HURST, Texas -- A utility pole fell on two workers who were repairing the pole on Saturday, killing one and injuring the other.
The pole fell on two men who were part of a five-man crew repairing a pole damaged during Thursday's storm in the 1000 block of Reed Street.
As crew members were putting the new 40-foot, 500-pound pole in place, it suddenly fell and hit two workers. The impact killed one of the workers and significantly injured another worker's face.
That person's injuries are not life-threatening. He has since been released from the hospital.
The crew was from Quanta Utility Services, which has been subcontracted by Oncor to help restore power.
Johnny Hightower with Quanta Utility Services said he believes a snapped cable may be to blame for the incident.
"It's just an unfortunate accident that's happened," he said. "And the pole -- the wench line broke on the machine we (were) using to set the pole, and the pole fell and struck the polers."
The crew was pulled from the area shortly after the accident.
Quanta Utility Services is providing all of them with counseling.
Oncor crews came out to the site after the incident to finish putting the new pole in place.
Oncor estimated that 4,500 homes and businesses remained without power on Saturday evening. The utility said power should be restored to all customers by Saturday night.
