The answer to that is to never sign a hold harmless clause. I tell the company that the customer will always bear the ultimate responsibility for ensuring payment. If they have an issue with that, it tells me that non-payment is a definite concern for them. In that case, I'm not sure I want to work for them. They can always post a bond as an alternative.
