The New Madrid quakes in 1811-1812 were so strong they re-routed the Mississippi River and were felt as far away as Boston. The area around southern Illinois/ Indiana, western Kentuck/Tennesee, eastern Missouri/Arkansas, and northern Mississippi is one huge earthquake zone. It's not a geological fault like San Adreas but it does produce large scale quakes every so-many hundreds of years, and the last one was almost two hundred years ago
