Some security systems detect the higher voltage used by POTS lines. EMTAs run a much lower voltage. However, I've also heard that you have to run back from the EMTA to the telco demarc on pair 2 and connect it to pair 1 so that the whole house is seeing it as originating from the telco NID. Sounds like BS to me, but that's what I was hearing at the shop back when I did cable.
