Since there are so many in this industry I will tell you the signs. I used to work in collections and I am also dealing with one now. Thank you, Eastern Underground, Coastal, and South Georgia Telecom!!!!
Here are some "red flags"
A company that only uses a P.O. Box (They're are usually hiding)
A company that has more than one business name at the p.o. box
When the mailbox is constantly full (it means people want there money)
The business phone does not get answered.
Calls don't get returned.
The answering machine doesn't use the company name.
These are just a few
Here's what you should do PRIOR to working with a new company.
Get a signed contract!!!!!! SCREW THE PERSONS WORD!!!!
Get credit references!!!! Check them out. And This is very important!!!
If you are taking on a lot of work run a credit check or get some background information on the company from Hoovers or Dun and Bradstreet.
Check with the state that the company is out of to make sure that it is incorporated
Make sure that you have the number to a landline phone and not just cellphones.
