Re: manhole gases

This is right out of our manual

The most common hazardous materials that are sometimes found in manholes and vaults include:

1. Vapors or gases that have escaped from underground storage, sewers, or piping; or liquids or gases such as:
-Gasoline
-Natural Gas
-Liquid Petroleum Gas
-Propane
2. Gases from fermentation of naturally occuring organic matter such as:
-Methane
-Carbon Dioxide
-Hydrogen Sulfide
3. By-products of comustion from vehicles or other types of equipment such as:
-Carbon Monoxide
-Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide can occur as either the result of fermentation of naturally occurring organic matter or as a by-product of combustion.
4. Hazards introduced into the atmosphere as a part of your work operation such as:
-Propane
-Nitrogen
-Acetylene
-MAPP Gas
-Helium

Some chemical compounds displace oxygen and can contribute to oxygen deficiency or "dead air" that will not support human life.
