Your motor winding 12 v diode is blown... when you hold the start switch down your start solenoid provides power to the coil and your battery powers it and after the motor starts the generator section powers the coil.. to run .. if the diode is blown then once you release the solenoid your coil looses power... simple fix.. remove the top power cover
and look for a small ceramic looking thing about 2" long (white with small wires wrapped around it) to test .. remove both wires and ohm it out.. needs to be about 6 ohms.. if open motor won't run.. if shorted...0 ohms motor will die ... and the biggest reason the 12v diode blows is your alternator regulator in the truck went south and sent 36v to the motor thru the charging circuit, check your truck charging system also.. no more then 19 vdc to batteries or you will replace the diode again and might burn out the LV windings in the armature.. check and make sure someone hasn't foil wrapped your 12V fuse or bypassed it..
