So, your source of income that supports you and your family isn't worth a substantial investment? If you are running your 1099 stuff correctly, I assume you are 1099, the vehicle you use to work is a business expense. It would cost you virtually nothing out of pocket to have a 20,000.00 truck.
You are right in stating that once you complete the install and everything is working perfectly, no customer is going to say anything about your vehicle. I would be silly to argue such a position. However, I HAVE heard of installers being turned away from gated communities and CX homes because their vehicles were so lousy looking that they didn't believe the techs were from the cable company.
I've been in this business a looooong time and typically, a worker's vehicle and the type of care they exhibited in maintaining said vehicle often coincided with their work ethic, attention to detail and ultimately, their professionalism. And to be fair, I've also seen a couple of the best techs ever work out of cardboard boxes, but that's the exception.
Additionally, I think it invalidates one's argument to be treated as a professional when it looks like you just bought your work vehicle from the buy here pay here dealer on the West side of town. It doesn't exactly scream "I am a Professional"!
I may be completely off base and your mileage may vary.
