And for god's sake, don't convert all your assets into cash because you'll get better use out of your benjamins by wiping your butt with them instead of spending them. Convert to actual assets such as gold. A good investment is the Kruggerand.
Make friends with your local gun store owner. Hang out there often and go shooting with him on the weekends, etc. You'll learn several different guns and rifles, etc. Also, when the SHTF, you can get over to that gun store and he'll probably welcome a familiar face for help defending the place. The gun store is a good place for an anti-looter holdout until the dust settles a bit. Then move the stuff over to a school. Those places are very defensible, probably the most defensible civilian installations available. Many even have bomb shelters. Older schools are better, especially Cold War-era schools.
It wouldn't hurt to get a couple lessons on flying an airplane. You can get out of a city quite quickly that way while everyone else is jamming up the freeway. Plus the looters won't be stealing them like they will be with cars, etc.
