Hootie Hoot is correct. Some recent author defined fascism as when Corporations run the government. We are a fascist state.
As far as the current police situation, we can go back to the Scali and Thomas Appointments. Now we have two more Roberts and Scali Lite, all appointed by Republican Presidents and all attacking the 4th Amendment in conjunction with both Democrats and Republicans that as Hootie Hoot said passed the patriot act. Bush also removed Possee Camatatus which use to prevent a police force from acting like the military to quash civil disobedience. Why do you think he did that?
If thats not bad enough we have a police force that goes beyond the 4th Amendment and does illegal searches everyday all day long, knowing if they get you in their system, the legal business is going to make money and your only hope is to purchase your civil liberties.

Most working people don't have the resources to fight for their liberties, so now we have created a defacto gestopo police force because a whole bunch of idiots out there say "Why should I worry, I have nothing to hide." We have a Congress that has sold out the 4th Amendment to look"tough on crime," and a new Supreme Court weighing heavily towards fascism, and a President who would be King.
Just Say No to Police Searches and protect your rights. You have the right to remain silent so keep your stupid mouth shut and dont give them any information without an attorney by your side. Do everything you can to get Ron Paul elected.
