MN Requires Sat Tech's to be Licensed

Minnesota Revises Satellite Technician Regulations
By Steve Hill

The State of Minnesota recently revised regulations governing the licensure of companies and individuals installing satellite television.

Prior to the changes, only companies installing satellite television were required to hold a contractor license and employ one person of record who holds the Power Limited Technician (PLT) license. If an individual was working for himself, that person would need to hold the contractor license and the PLT license, too. All other installers worked under the supervision of the company, but were not being tracked by the state.

However, new regulations now require all unlicensed technicians (i.e., non PLT licensees) to register with the Minnesota Department of Labor.

In addition, to help the state meet a pressing demand for licensed satellite television installers, the state has waived the mandatory three years experience an individual must have to qualify to take the PLT license exam. The waiver allows any individuals who have ever sent an application to the state or submitted an application by Dec. 30, 2007, to opt out of the three-year requirement. The waiver is indefinite.

Finally, the new law increases the bond and insurance requirements for contractors.

More information on these changes and how to comply can be found below or at the Minnesota Department of Labor website: http://www.electricity.state.mn.us.
