Just because you're a "little guy" doesn't mean you don't have to cover your hiney. It all comes down to documentation - good old paperwork - pics, emails, letters, whatever.
If you have a Waiver of Liability, and if whoever is coming after you signed it, send a copy to them via certified letter (so they have to sign for it). If a lawyer is involved helping you, show it to them.
If you have no paperwork, you can get in serious trouble.
I always tell my employees to keep a copy of whatever they give me. Multiple supervisors see their timesheets before they get to the Payroll dept so anything can happen - even get lost.
