Sounds like this can work good for a legitimate contractor as he won't be competing against techs who are foolish enough to accept being 1099ed for what essentially amounts to employee work. Less competition as a contractor. Set yourself up as a sole proprietorship or S-corp with a legitimate business name. Then get software like ProSite and set your install rates and offer your service to multiple shops. You can get overflow as there is going to be lots of it when they go all employee.

From the above description, it sounds like you just have to be a legitimate business as opposed to an individual entity. That's the way it should be. Too many companies expect you to be exclusive to them and want to 1099 you. It doesn't work that way, as a contractor your services should be available to the rest of the marketplace.
