Serious reply!!! I sometimes look down. It all depends on the pole. If I've got a clean pole , I just climb it , If I'm in the city and a pole has been rittled with nails from signs or it has race ways all over , then I'll watch where I put my gaffs, as far a as the rodeo climbers they 've got pretty descent poles to climb. I don't hitch hike, that way I can push away. I climb the lea way side of the pole .
