really i'm gonna say that that's wrong.........in theory at least. the surge should be looking for the quickest path to the ground, be it inches or yards, so that by your ground being even a few inches nearer the primary ground source the surge or at least the majority of that energy should follow to the primary ground source.............of course most ground sources are secondary in actuality...........i've only worked one system that INSISTED on either an acorn on the rod itself or a split bolt when the rod was buried.

any mythbusters see the lightning and ground wire show? it should be required viewing during training. just my personal belief. i think they've done it twice........once for the "hair dryer in the bathtub" and once as it applies to this thread regarding phones and lightning. both showed the same results, closer to the ground is where the majority of the energy goes.
