It's just like everything else in this business, there are a lot of variables. It depends on how congested the city is, what they are requiring on the maps ( this changes from job to job), weather, under ground (locate or not) or air. It depends on how serious you are if you will make any money or not. Veterans with the right equipment and good work ethic can do 5 to 7 miles almost every day. If you have a good understanding of construction or splicing a new guy could expect 1 to 3 every day and someone without that knowledge even less. You need to be able to work gig free and write VERY NEATLY. If you are willing to work all the hours you can in the field and work on your maps at night you will make a very good living. If you want to map in the morning, work on maps in the afternoon, and party at night; find something else to do. I enjoyed it when I did it. Good Luck.
