The problem is most likely in your transmitter input levels, I've had this happen before and that was the case, sounds like your clipping the laser or overdriving it. The input levels to the node are good and they should work fine at those levels. Find some specs on that trans and set your inputs accordingly you may need to use a pre-amp or you may need to simply pad the input down (most likely the case). I've had some transmitters that required 30db in and some that require only 17 so some manufacturers specs are in order to solve the issue. A quick fix would be to have someone place simple inline pads to the transmitter in varying stages and watch the picture for improvements it should tell you which way to go with the inputs right away. The input will also vary according to channel load on the transmitter you really need the specs. The splice in your patch cord could be the problem but thats an easy fix with a phone call and an overnight shipment of 2 properly made jumpers. You should be ordering one of those anyhow as the jumper will be easy to break with that splice in it,and you need a spare.
