Digital and Sub Channels, HD and SD

I have a question about digital channels. If I am understanding everything correctly, thanks to compression (MPEG2?), 2 digital channels can fit in one 6MHz spacing...correct?

I guess this is the part where I am confused. How much space does a digital stations sub channels require? IE...channel 105 (QAM channel) is carrying one 'main' channel and 5 sub-channels, and also a second 'main' channel with 1 sub channel. Isn't that all in a 6MHz space (channel 105)? How can all these channels fit in this one 6MHz space? Or is it taking up more than 6MHz?(confused)

Can anyone help get this through my thick analog for so long head?(spin)
